A gun isn't my preferred way to go out since I've never used one, but I WOULD like to have one as a backup in case the other methods fail. The problem? I'm from New York, which has some of the strictest purchasing laws in the country (among other things, I'd need to justify why I want a gun, and have multiple references from others. Considering I have no history with guns, that'd be a huge red flag). From what I've read, even ordering one from a less restrictive state isn't an option, since they won't ship to NY. Given this... do I have any options besides going through the extremely lengthy process of applying for a permit? I'd prefer not to go through the black market, since it seems extra-risky- getting caught, getting a forgery, someone taking the gun and my money, etc. I'm at a loss here.

Only other option I can think of is to relocate to a more gun-friendly state.

Can you get a shotgun more easily? Shotguns are usually less regulated.

"No permit is required for the purchase of a rifle or shotgun (except in New York City)."

What was it the black powder guns they use in the U.K. is still an option. I recall reading that on the gun thread. The one-shotters that you load one pellet in at a time.

Shotguns or rifles. But a shotgun is the best one for CTB (over a rifle). I understand that handguns are more restrictive, I didn't realize New York was so bad. I had to get a special permit to buy a handgun in Michigan some years ago but they didn't ask you what you want it for. If they do it's for personal protection.
