Share and discuss your favorite media centered around suicide! Music, books, movies, mangas, anything goes.
Oh, and just in case: Some of the medias shared here may romanticize suicide. Unhealthy romanticizing is a thing and should be watched out for.

I'll start:

- I'm a big fan of the video game Omori that tackles on the subject of suicide and grief. Can't tell you how exactly (as it would be spoiler), but I heavily recommend it. It's on PC and a few consoles.

- One of my all-time favorite songs is "Yes, The River Knows" by The Doors that talks about someone about to kill themselves by jumping underwater, and sharing their regrets. I got my username from a misspelled lyrics that's in this video :)

I wouldn't say it's a favorite but I happened to stumble upon "Lords of Chaos" the movie last night and Jesus Christ was there a brutal suicide scene in that.

Oh god I love this anime! It came to my mind but I didn't mention it because of how obscure it was lmao. But yeah, that part really struck me when I was younger...

I especially remember the song that came with it. Still makes me tear up to this day, I would always listen to it the first time I had suicidal ideation (around 16 years old back then).

In the movie The Royal Tenenbaums when Richie manically shaves off all his hair and facial hair and says "I'm gonna kill myself tomorrow" and then just attempts straight away. While Elliott Smith's Needle in the Hay plays. Something about the leap into the absurd of deciding to kill yourself but waiting til tomorrow, and just deciding to fucking do it. (He's not successful, but still)

Also I see you mentioned omori so it's just right that I mention my fav game of all time, yume Nikki. The game in general inspired manyyyyyyy of omori's themes and design choices. I'm like 99% sure that omori ending is just an homage to the ending of yume Nikki cuz it's like staged exactly the same lol

Probably know them already but I love $uicideboy$. They have amazing songs to listen to when I am depressed and wanting to die and just wallowing.

And to those I love thanks for sticking around
New chains, same shackles
Diemonds

All amazing songs/lyrics. There's others but those are just the ones I listen to the most.

Love suicideboys. So many great songs, definitely up there when it comes to my favorite artists. "Antarctica" is my favorite, along with diemonds.

For me, I really just like to watch straight up videos of suicide. It gives me some insight onto how it may look for me, and even provides a little bit of comfort. Here is a link to a compilation, but beware of popups on that website, I highly recommend using/installing an ad-blocker before you go on there.

As for more artistic media, this is also one I really enjoyed. When I watched it, I was really into death metal and rock music, and although I don't really listen to that stuff anymore, I would probably watch it again just for the entertainment value. Even outside of the suicide scene, I thought it was a pretty good movie, although I'm aware most in the metal community are heavily critical about it because of it's portrayals of certain details.

Richie and Margot Tenenbaums have to be some of my all time favorite cinema characters.

My favourite book centred around suicide is "The Virgin Suicides" by Jeffrey Eugenides.

I love listening to "One more light" by Linkin Park. When I hear the song "How to save a life" it always reminds me of a girl I met in hospital who later died by suicide.

Black Paradox by Junji Ito (horror manga)

After meeting each other on a website named Black paradox, four individuals - each using their online pseudonyms - come together to attempt a group suicide. They decide to drive out in a car to a remote location and use the vehicle's exhaust fumes to kill themselves. However, one of the group members, Marousou, runs away when she realizes that all the others are doppelgängers. She eventually meets the real ones in a different car, whose suicide attempt is interrupted by her arrival....

There's probably no piece of art which prominently features suicide that has surpassed the cultural impact of The Sorrows of Young Werther. Supposedly it even triggered a suicide epidemic in Europe, although I'm not sure how much truth there is to that.

Surprised I've never head of it then. It looks cool, I should give it a go! I wonder how it stood the pass of time

It's not entirely about suicide, but it's a very common theme --> the Channel 4 show 'Flowers'. Absolutely fantastic. It's the show which I think best captures what depression really feels like. It also stars Olivia Coleman, and she's such a good actress!

Someone else who loves Flowers. A wonderful show.

Morris's line "Love makes it worse" hits very real.

I Have A Special Plan For This World by Current 93. It was written by Thomas Ligotti as well

Also, the movie First Reformed deals pretty explicitly with suicide and antinatalism in a not lame or reductive way.

Suicide room, my all time favorite movie. It has stayed with me from the moment I first saw it years ago in a way not much else had. I don't think any other media ever resonated with me as much. I wish there were more things that could make me feel like this movie has.

Also this song was in it which makes it even better.

Coming back to also recommend 'Fleabag'. It really struck a chord with me (using sex as a way to feel human and etc.). Really good series, would highly recommend!

Silent Hill 2 (2001) and its energy feels the most relatable to me... especially with the "In Water" ending

dream games like Omori, Yume Nikki, and LSD Dream Emulator have a special place in my heart. other medias i would like to bring up are DDLC, Goodnight PunPun, Bojack Horseman, and Everything Everywhere All at Once.
  • Sayori's depression was written perfectly. there are so many things she says that i could relate to, and at the time i hadn't considered i was depressed. DDLC was a fun play overall but Sayori's poems, and her mentality of feeling guilty for not being happy struck a chord with me.
  • PunPun is just a good read overall. It's very depressing but the art is gorgeous.
  • Bojack Horseman is slow at first. the first season sets up the characters and their dynamics but the later seasons get more interesting. "The View From Halfway Down" is an amazing episode that discusses suicide and the finality of death.
  • Everything Everywhere All at Once is more lighthearted than the others but the overarching plot is how nothing matters in this world. at first it sounds negative but they spin it into "nothing matters, so do what you want while you're here". one of my favorite movies ever.

honorable mention is saw cause i relate to some of the depressed/suicidal characters but this list is so long sorry

Umineko, aka Umineko no Naku Koro ni or Umineko When They Cry , which is also my favorite piece of media in general. It's really long and complex, so it's hard to talk about details, and I don't want to spoil anything anyway, so I won't talk too much about it.

Some of the main characters are suicidal and almost every character has some kind of trauma or mental health problem. It's really emotional and it has a lot of great writing.

It has helped me a lot and it changed my life. It's wonderful.

Sala Samobójców (movie)
Classic, was obsessed with it as a teenager. Used to cry a lot while watching, but I don't think current me would have the same emotions.

Himizu (manga)
I think a lot of people here would enjoy this one, considering the ending and how the protagonist perceives his life.
Bokutachi ga Yarimashita (manga)
Sillier than the above, but one of my all time favorites. I made a thread awhile back with some panels posted.
