I really liked history and still do.

I will always like it.

It seems very good to know stuff about either your country or another country.

But do you guys like it?

I really enjoy it and will.

I think the parts of history I like are so niche

I'm a bit of a fashion history nerd

I like seeing how clothing and style evolved over time

And what these garments meant to certain cultures, how people stayed warm or cool, what meant status and so on

But yes learning about it is important!

History's a lot of fun. I really like early modern European history since I see a lot of the consequences of it today, and it just feels like a super ambitious crossover where I learn one thing, and then the other thing was done by that person's cousin or something. History is just cool in general though, I like learning about it, no matter the subtopic.

I think I would have liked history with a better teacher. All we did was copy a paragraph off the blackboard that had blank spaces on. We had to use our text books to fill in the blanks. Literally, that same formula- every lesson! I've no idea how they got away with that!

But, I enjoy museums and documantaries, historical drama. Especially seeing how people lived. What they believed in. How they invented things. I'm useless at remembering facts though- dates, locations, chronology. The academic side to it! Lol.

Do you have a favourite era?

I'm also probably more interested in other countries history rather than my own (UK.) I was very in to Ancient Egypt at one time.

As a natural born citizen of the US, I've never really cared for US history. It's short in the grand scheme of things, not a whole lot of interesting things happen in the US unless other countries are involved, making it more world history, and the most interesting parts of US history are the many horrible things that my country has done to its own people and to people in other nations.

I always liked world history... there is a rich history outside of US history that is really interesting, and not just for the bad stuff. There are lots of good stories in world history.

I know that history is smarter than I am.

History is extremely important to me and the main lesson of history by the way is that people do not learn the lessons of history. If you want to be successful you should study history and philosophy. If you want to be rich you should study history no matter what your field because it will teach everything you need to know. It's all happened before, it's all gonna happen again.
The guys in Washington haven't read history and the ones who have read history think that they're smarter than history, they actually think they're smarter than history and they can control it.

And if you can understand history you will see that the world is always changing and you need to understand that if you want to be successful at investing or anything. You need to understand that anything we think in any year is not going to be accurate 15 years later. And you can pick any year in history and you'll see that 15 years later everything had changed. 2000 well the world was very, very different in 2015. So history will teach you very, very important things about yourself, about the world and thats what you need if you're going to be successful in the future. And history will certainly teach us all that nothing lasts forever. No currency has been on top for more than 100-150 years, the world has had many international currencies in the past. The world's had many things, technologies, ect they have all moved on and changed to something else. Well if you want to be successful you need to know that. And then you need to figure out what the new change will be and then you'll be very successful.

History was always my favorite subject in school along with geography. I just soak up history like a sponge. Don't necesarily remember all the dates and exact numbers of armies or whatever but I have brain that memorizes people and events and places and cultures very well. I don't know if I have a favorite history period, maybe US civil war. It's usually some sort of war. But yea down to discuss and learn and share knowledge.

Thanks for your answer. Yeah teachers really impact it in my opinion. Like I had 2 history teachers that really did their job and they teached it perfectly. My favorite era? Thats hard to say but I really like WW2. Just hearing it makes me wanna learn more everytime.

I like history, but it's also disturbing to know what will happen next. I know human nature all too well.

My favorite periods in history are middle ages, especially early middle ages, with the ftanks, goths, langobards, vandals etc.; it had a certain magic that was lost later on; and late antiquity, because it feels so relatable.

If you're interested in US history, I can recommend the book 'revolutionary characters' by gordon s. wood. It cleara up a lot of miscinceptions about the founders.

Alexander hamilton is probably the most interesting of them. It's funny that his, at the time, radical vision for america came to be the predominant one that would eventually be fulfilled.

Since I'm not from US, I never had much interest in revolutionary war. I seen some videos on youtube about that period but it's all kinda foggy to me. Reason why I'm such a US civil war buff is because it was one of rare wars where there was a clear good and bad side. Of course everything is relative in this world but I feel like one side had heart and was right, and the other side was evil pretty much, in my opinion. And Lincoln is my favorite historical figure. Recommend watching movie Lincoln by Steven Speilberg.

I unfortunately do know a lot about US history, but it's not great.

Be careful where you source your Civil War history. Slavery was bad. There should be no argument there... but the American Civil War wasn't just about slavery. In fact, it really looks more and more like slavery was just a tool. Governments like to use wedge issues to define people. When you really look at things it gets a bit more grey.

Consider...

The US South wanted slaves. That's clear. Whether slaves were "treated well" or like garbage, they were still owned people and that's horrible. But... it isn't so much that the US North wanted to free slaves... rather, many in the north didn't want "their kind" anywhere in the north, and particularly with the westward expansion. The South wanted to takes slaves with them as the country built-out westward... the North didn't want slaves coming west at all. Lincoln was good at twisting things... he didn't want to free the slaves, but he was willing to do it to sway slaves and disrupt the South.

In theory, the US Constitution supports the notion of states leaving the Union if they want. When states joined the US in the beginning they had a right to secede if they wanted out. But in practice, once the Union happened, unless a majority of states wanted to bail, the minority of states who wanted to leave were always going to be met with resistance. Governments don't generally keep their word unless it suits them.

Meanwhile, our government supports civil wars in other countries all the time! Japan split off from China a long way back... same for Taiwan... North and South Korea split... we support this stuff all the time when we get an ally out of the deal. So our government isn't against civil wars and leaving unions except when it happened here.

Meanwhile... post Civil War in the US... Slaves were "freed" but what did that mean? No reparations back in the day. Actual slave owners weren't punished in any meaningful way... slaves were now free but largely excluded and oppressed for nearly another 100 years after the Civil War supposedly gained them their freedom. Meanwhile, the North also did some dirty tricks by putting freed slaves in positions of power in some places in the South just to rub salt in the wound... but didn't really support those freed slaves in those positions.

I mean... if the North in the US was the "right" side and all about freeing slaves as history tries to tell us... why did it take another 100 years to get close to equal rights in this country? Why were there no reparations back when you could have taken it directly from actual slave owners? Why did we continue to screw over Native Americans by land-grabs and pushing them around even as we claimed to be for freedom and fairness and such? Why do we still to this day exploit illegal immigration for cheap labor? Why do we exploit people in other countries for cheap labor in conditions we know to be routinely poor?

I could go on... The "good guys won the Civil War" history that our country tries to pain just doesn't hold up. The South were doing bad things, sure. No defense from me on that... but it's not like the North was the white hats either.

Yeah I know some stuff about the post war situation, the whole 40 acres and a mule thing that never happened. Union didn't want to antagonize south after war by stationing lot of troops there so effectively in some places things were still the same. Some slaves didn't even know they were freed. South also tried to basically rephrase slavery into unfavorable labour arrangments and such. You could argue that things might have been different if Lincoln didn't get assasinated but we'll never know. From my understanding Grant was symphatetic to struggle of blacks and natives but wasn't politically savy like Lincoln to sway the tide. Lot of propaganda too by daughters of confederates and kkk types so it's not easy to really know for sure.

And I didn't even mention all the resistance to the Civil Rights movement nearly 100 years later... like even after "freeing" slaves there were enough people determined to deter them as much as possible. Even today, lots of people trying to roll back things and I guarantee you that if you had an honest discussion there are more people than you'd like to know in this country who would absolutely be happy owning some slaves today IF they could get away with it.

And then there's all the Civil War monuments... that weren't erected after the war... but in the 1900s... the 1950s even... and when people dared to question them not very long ago, there was a shitstorm of "why are you trying to erase history" when people were just wondering out loud how the side that lost the war got to keep erecting statues dedicated to people supporting slavery. And there has been recent movement to actually restore monuments that were taken down a while back.

Don't even get me started on how the US was kind of okay with Germany in WWII and how we rejected Jewish immigrants trying to flee from there at the time... and how things might have ended a LOT differently if Japan had not gotten out of line and attacked Pearl Harbor, basically forcing the US government's hand to join against Germany. Prior to that, the US was really trying to stay out of that war and there were a surprising number of wealthy/elite in the US who were supporters of Germany.

And of course we did the whole rounding up Japanese American citizens into camps thing... There's just so much horrible in American history.
