Has anyone successfully got a dnr done. I have a dr appt to discuss if she will do this. She knows my history to a degree. I know she legaly dosnt have to so i can only plead my case. Im trying to make sure absolutely everything goes right next time.

It's my position that attempts to emplace a DNR will only alert Dr's that plans for suicide are progressing. What's more they very likely won't be acknowledged as suicide is seen as mental illness. I don't know that a DNR even has the force of law at any rate. Just my thoughts on the DNR.

I can also say from my experiences those tasked with stopping a suicide just won't take no for an answer.

I posted this same question months ago. This is my quick story. I've had the same dr for years and he is aware I'm depressed. He has prescribed psych medicine for me and I use to take it. For the last 3 years at my annual I bring up can he sign my DNR. He always say no and that I'm too young. I tell him my fear is I'll have an accident and forced to stay here. Every year for 3 years he has said no. I asked a dr at random what are my rights. This dr told me she wouldn't sign off on it either because I'm too young! So basically the answer is no. It seems we have to wait for a natural death or ctb.

Yeah you can fill the room with copies of your DNR and tattoo another copy on your body and emergency personnel will still ignore it. DNRs are really only worthwhile for people expecting to die in a care setting like a hospital or hospice.

DNR doesn't mean you don't want life-saving medical treatment. It just means that if your heart stops, they won't do things like chest compressions or drugs to restart it. But as long as your heart is still beating, DNR does not apply

DNR-CC means do NOT resuscitate, only comfort care! (CC) You can use oxygen if needed; be given pain and anxiety medication if it will make you comfortable only! They can NOT give you CPR. If you have a DNR-arrest, they can slow or speed up the heart if necessary, but if the heart stops they can't restart it. Hopefully , that clears up this up.

DNR and comfort care are two different things. DNR only applies if your heart stops. Anyone can request to be DNR at any age (although there are situations where it doesn't apply, such as during surgery and 24 hours afterwards).

Comfort care/comfort measures only (CMO) means no life-prolonging care except what is necessary for pain, anxiety, etc. This is typically only done for people who are already dying. If you are conscious, you are allowed to refuse medical care in most situations even without being CMO. If you are unconscious but with a heartbeat and there is a decent chance of saving you, no doctor would withhold medical care unless you *did* have an advanced directive indicating CMO, but you would have to talk to a lawyer or maybe a notary to get one of these. (You could tell them you have a religious objection to life-prolonging medical care.)

Yes, unfortunately. My husband had one. When he went to the ER last year they DID NOT honor his DNR. I was not with him at this visit. He signed another one while he was recovering in ICU.

Last Monday he fell ill and went back to the ER. I was with him this time. He flat-lined and they immediately started resuscitation efforts. I told them he had a DNR and would they please stop. The nurse continued CPR (but they did not shock him) until the doctor came in, spoke to me for a second, and then told the nurse to stop.

I don't understand how they can lie to your face like that. He signed MULTIPLE DNRs. He was not kidding. He was in pain and ready to go. I do not understand why people who know nothing about you, your take on this life, and what you have been going thru think they can just ignore your wishes when you've done EVERYTHING you've been told is necessary to have your wishes and beliefs honored. It a disgusting system we have here in the US.

Dnrs are tricky. If its not "in the face" of the paramedic or emt they will try to save you. I do know of a couple people who had life alert type jewelry made that said dnr on file. If you know what to say it may not be so suspicious. I've seen people have the Lucas machine and thumper used on them. They're very violent and do a lot of damage. Many people use this as a reason to have a dnr.
