Another conversation here made me think of this. But, God I hated those games. I was already paranoid about my weight growing up so, the thought of leaping over children's legs in 'ladders' only to fall and crush someone used to terrify me. Plus, I was obviously- not the most natural athlete. The other one was musical chairs. It became like a brawl to scramble for the last few chairs. I hated it.

I suppose though, they are early representations of life. Especially the damn chairs. Fight everyone off ruthlessly for the limited resources... Well done- you won a chair.

I expect that's why private schools often focus as heavily on competitive sports as academics. To toughen them up and create ruthless winners. Not that I went to a private school!

How about you though? Were you/ are you good at competitive sports and games? Do you think there are parallels between how competetive or ruthless you can be and, how well you do in life?

Was I good at them? Not that far above average. Depended on the day, and I do think my mental/physical disabilities made it harder (I suck at dodging/catching in dodgeball but I can aim like a motherfucker). I did like them though. Mostly the adrenaline and the possibility of winning, but sometimes in musical chairs it would be a fun bonding experience.

It definitely did feel freeing to be able to be competitive in a healthy way.

EDIT: Wanted to add that narc drop was sometimes a problem if I lost as a kid (moping for like the entire day, sometimes being snappy lmao), but ONLY if I wasn't close with these people. If the majority of them I really liked/respected, it was easier to laugh off the loss. But in say, a school where I only had a few friends, I got a bit bummed. The higher the amount of friends I had participating, the lower the chance of rejection sensitivity and mental fallout.

i got smacked in the face with a soccer ball in an indoor soccer session, someone was disappointed because i flinched and backed away from a ball during volleyball, i wacked someone's face hard in badminton, stopped playing any batting games (cricket, baseball, etc..) because i couldnt wear the helmet + glasses and getting glasses just made me horrid at it, i used to be medicore at best for baseball, softball, circket stuff, even hitting good but my skills dropped so hard lmao.

those mini games, musical chairs, ladder, golden child n wtv else there is, i sucked at most lol, esp golden child because i cant run fast + cant shoot a basketball for shit.

Never heard of musical ladders, remember musical chairs and musical statues. Never really been competitive in arbitrary things though, I have my strengths in areas that matter, don't feel the need the prove myself to anyone. Or maybe deep down I know I'm worthless.

I was never really good at competitive sports because I am blind as a bat. Did enjoy playing them though. Always wished I could play tennis but I can not see the ball well enough to swing at it.

There wasn't music with the ladders game. Maybe that would have actually made it fun! Just perilously leaping over children's legs. It was one of those playground games rather than a party game.

Sports wise I peaked at high-school. Defensive end who loved Mark Gastineau. Definitely not saying I was going pro but there were at least scholarships available. Then the usual knee injury and I became another member of the legion of "coulda beens". Other than pick-up games with my friends, that is the extent of my sports ability.

During elementary, I played Little League - my dad coached and that was fun...until we moved again.

Regarding musicals chairs, I was usually larger than most of my classmates and was not that competitive outside of football, so I let them get the chairs and was eliminated first. Dodge ball was fun - Aunty Eye Over, etc. Typical 1970's kid stuff. It's funny how hindsight always looks better than it actually was.......
