To paraphrase an acquaintance.
Maybe depression is ultimately the realisation that nothing can be ultimately hoped for on this benighted planet.
Or, in my own words, the gap between reality and human aspiration is unbridgeable.
The world is a terrible place. Why? It is terrible because it is.
