Modern cars have catalysts and it's very hard to get enough CO from them. Coal does work but it requires some preparation and honestly, it's too much prep for me. Not to mention it's hard to tell if you have the required dose without expensive and hard to get CO analysers. If anyone is serious...

You want it to measure to 10,000 ppm. Yep, they're expensive.

$300 will get you a CO analyzer capable of measuring CO levels up to 10000 PPM.
