Help Cant get to carotid arteries after finding them

I'm pretty sure I found my carotid arteries because I was close to passing out when pressing them. I just cant get compress them when I try to with a rope or material like that, instead I think I'm compressing the jugular veins. Anyone know how to make it easier?
