I see videos of old people in nursing homes. I don't want to live like that. I think I'd off myself before I get to that age.

I'm scared that I'll end up in one of those homes that turns out to be abusive. I don't have kids who'll look after me when I get old.

Yes. Nursing homes, most family having long since passed away, aching bones, poor vision and hearing, memory loss, all sounds unpleasant to me.

Both my grandparents were kept alive by modern medicine long past when life was worth living.

I was secretly happy when both of them passed two years apart from each other because it meant they were no longer in pain, lonely, and suffering.

We need to consider the difference between life and truly living.

the evil of this world is unfathomable

even if people are over age 70 in constant pain , immobile , with skin sores and begging for someone to allow them to purchase Nembutal, morphine, opiods etc. they won't allow that . for what reason? pure evil control. there is no logical reason. 1. the person wants to die and is in pain . 2. the person is costing millions per year in medical care and they want to die. if they want to live that's different . 3. they're over 70.

no they say "you have to suffer" for 30 years of torture every second against your will from age 70 to 100.

to me none of the "happy" or pleasurable activities are worth even 3 seconds of the worst constant worst pain much less hours , days years of the worst pain.

i worked in a nursing home. it's unimaginable hell

I understand, I find it terrifying how a human can suffer for so long just to face the agony and torture of old age, it's all just so futile to me and no matter what I'd always prefer the peace of non-existence over being burdened with this deeply undesirable, torturous existence where there is no limit as to how much agony one can feel, existence truly is an abomination to me and I find it the most terrible tragedy how this existence was even imposed at all causing all this futile unnecessary suffering as a result.

I did get old! Not that old yet, but physical deterioration terrifies me. It's definitely one reason I'm here on sasu at 62 (along with some other challenges). I woild love it if this was an easier choice to make.

Given the direction that the world is going, yes. Healthcare in America is going to crap (as if it was that good before). Human behavior is regressing to tribalism and barbarism. So, if one doesn't belong to some group of people, they are open game. This prospect alone frightens me as I enter into my 50's and beyond. I just don't see this world being kind to people who live alone and are aging. It wasn't so to begin with. Definitely, not the west. And now the west is crumbling. So, with it are any moral customs that it did have. I fail to see where anyone my age is getting any kind of hope for the future.

Perhaps a little black and white, I know a lot of happy 70 year olds. And a few happy 80 year olds. Not really any happy 90 year olds.

But I'm with you...at this age if we say the joy of living is gone, it would be best if we could be allowed to CTB legally and comfortably. We're a huge drain on the countries resources and on those who take care of us. My Mom was pretty good to 80. She lived to 86 and wished there was a way to leave almost those full 6 years. She would say "I'm just here using up resources". She was delighted when she got cancer.

So yeah, let us old ones go when we're ready.

Seeing family get old and die of old age is very hard.
Their quality of life can be terrible, often for years.
Even if they had the knowhow and means to end it for themselves, often life takes sudden twists that can take that option away from us instantly on a whim.
But for most people life is precious and they'll cling on to it no matter what the pain and suffering.
Not for me. I'm terrified of being like that and being at the mercy of the State to take care of me. F* that.

I am old enough at 48. I've always had plenty of reasons for wanting to die but I think as we get older there's even more reasons. As a female going through perimenopause, it's worse than I ever thought. I chain-smoke, don't eat healthy, won't take my blood pressure meds, and hope for the day when heart disease or a stroke will take me out. I see commercials about people recovering and they act so happy and all I can think is why?

Yeah, I think it varies. Both my parents wanted to go and were happy to get cancer at 79 and 85. I'm sure they would have rather had an easy exit when the time was right. (Although we live in a MAID state and neither chose it). But my husbands parents both lived into their 90s and they really wanted to stick around. My Mom used to say the people who want to live to 100 are 99 year olds.

Here in the UK we don't have MAiD. Instead they passed a law that the medical profession has to put the same amount of effort into keeping everyone alive regardless of age, whether they are 19 or 99. Utterly ridiculous. It's changing now though, the first new laws going thru to allow assisted dying. Finally.
My grandfather died peacefully in his armchair in his 80s. Had no health issues up until then. One of the lucky few.

Same.
I see elderly people and all I can think is that I never want to get nearly as old as them. I see them at the cancer center when I go with my mom for her treatment and just can't fathom why anyone would fight for life at that point.

As a newer member though, I hope you have learned from this site that it's not so easy to check out. I have a friend who just said recently she would off herself to not live to be elderly, and I can't seem to make her understand without getting into details, that it's just not nearly as easy as it looks. Another OD won't do her in. I wish I had realized that when I was younger.

Sorry if that sounded preachy.

Well, not preachy to me anyway. That's what I'm learning the more I'm here, and it's discouraging.

That is why it would be beneficial if there were a version of medically assisted suicide for those over a given age that could be based on quality of life instead of having six months to live.

There won't be an epidemic of people choosing CTB. In Washington state less than half a percent of deaths per year are from MAID. Most people simply are not going to choose this path.

I don't know if I would say I have a fear of getting old, but at the same time I do have a very strong sensitivity to being in hospitals and like settings. I would struggle to eat the food they server and in general it would be a hellish experience for me.

If you're lucky. If not then add to that getting beaten and mistreated by the nursing staff for simply being too slow or falling over or soiling yourself or something else out of your control. Unfortunately it happens, especially in state run homes (in the UK at least).

40 sounds a bit too old for my liking but if I want to get all the stuff I want to do in this lifetime then I'll probably have to stick around until then. 60 sounds like a miserable time.

Yes and that's why I'm CTB'ing before I reach that point.

My parents have the same issues as me and they've never gotten better. They're miserable and continuously coping and I'm frankly doing the same.

I think being old is only nice if you're a celebrity with money to pass as a yute, JLO is older than my mother yet she looks younger than her.

When I was in grade school I used to visit residents at one of the local nursing homes. Later, as a reporter, I often went to nursing homes when they celebrated birthdays to publish photos in the newspaper. Both experiences made an impression on me.
