I seem to have read somewhere that Spring is the more common season for suicides (among men one study suggests) and was curious if it is due to something that time of year that prompts the decision to carry out self deliverance, or just coincidence.

There was also a rather ironic find that possibly an increase of sunlight also prompts the carrying out of ctb. This makes no sense as presumably the absorbtion of sunlight is supposed to alleviate the psychological factors of depression.

Has anybody heard of these two findings?

I think it's because people start feeling better or better enough to ctb
Peace/hugs

I heard from someone that used to work in a physciatric ward that he saw an uptick in suicide attempt cases in the spring and summer. He said people tend to be manic with more daylight, leading to suicide. Not sure how accurate, just what he told me.

wow, I always thought SAD- seasonal affective disorder-always caused depression to worsen in winter. Maybe it also the stark contrast between your own life & mood against what is supposed to be a joyful, happy time-full of renewed life- flowers blooming, spring lambs etc, people all happy in the park on the first warm days-when I feel down- I much prefer it to be dark, cold and rainy or i cant handle the nice weather etc, Oh also longer days?! cant just hide away as much or guilt if you do

I think its because of the contrast. Darkness and cold weather "fits" more to the depressed mood. At spring /summertime people generally seem to be happier and go out more etc. so the suicidal people feel even more alone.

SAD disorder does exist but it is my understanding that it is a condition separate from hard-core clinical depression.

I also read it is commonly accepted that people think depression peaks during the holidays, buy that is becoming a myth.

I still think it's ironic that increase sunshine can trigger a ctb

I remember googling this a while back and again come across the increase in manic behaviour during the summer months.

Also my 2 cents, anyone wanting to perform a method outside may be more inclined when the weather is more pleasant

The author of this presentation pulled some intriguing data. According to his book though, if one is clinically on the edge, these home remedy techniques won't be effective:

Maybe it's bec some people don't want to doit during the holidays and wait until after the new year, then need a few weeks to get their nerve up to actually doing it and by then I'd figure it would be around spring time. No idea.

I think anything can trigger CTB, depends on personal properties and attitudes. Some prefer spring, some prefer autumn.

I agree - but the stats are showing a higher increase in Spring for male ctb's.

Intriguing take—the gray, and darkness, and cooler pallete of light is more congruent with one's psychological disposition. The darker environment could perhaps cause less emotional friction.

I seem to remember that Finland has a high rate of suicide due to the lesser amount of daylight. Wether this is true I do no t know.

I definitely think it's because of 1) feeling extra lonesome at a time you should feel happy 2) if you don't have the weather or any situational circumstances to blame on your mental state then you must think, damn I really am depressed, I still feel this way, I should just do it, etc.
I think people may be more depressed during winter months but more certain of their decision in warmer seasons
